Types of Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is used to fill the space between two healthy teeth when one or more of them are missing. Typically, a dental crown is put on the healthy teeth by a Palm Harbor, FL dentist on each side of the gap to support the bridge between them. These teeth are called anchor teeth or abutment teeth. The bridge effectively forms a pontic or fake tooth. The pontic can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.

When might I need a dental bridge?

You might need a dental bridge if you have one or more missing teeth. To have a dental bridge you will need to have healthy teeth on either side of the gap in your teeth.

There are four different types of dental bridges: 

Traditional Dental Bridge

The classic dental bridge is the most popular form of bridge. Traditional dental bridges are made out of an artificial tooth bordered on either side by a dental crown. The dental crowns provide support for the bridge, while the artificial tooth fills the gap caused by missing teeth. Traditional dental bridges require healthy teeth on either side of the gap. To support the bridge, each of these teeth must be changed so that dental crowns may be implanted.

Cantilever Bridge 

Only one crown is required for support. This is a less invasive method that may be suitable for persons who do not wish to destroy healthy teeth. However, the single crown can function as a lever, increasing the likelihood of tooth and jaw injury.

Maryland Bridges 

Maryland bridges are more conservative and less intrusive than conventional or cantilever bridges. The bridge is supported by metal or porcelain frameworks affixed to the backs of the teeth on each side of the gap. These bridges can help keep healthy teeth, but they are less stable.

Implant Supported Denture

This form of bridge connects fake teeth to an implant surgically inserted in the jawbone, as well as an artificial abutment tooth linked to the implant. The bridge is then glued to the implant-supported abutments. This approach necessitates two surgeries: one to insert the implant into the jawbone and one to link the abutment tooth to the implant.
